Trying to know somebody from what they post online, is like thinking you know a book just by looking at it’s cover, yet there is a whole story you haven’t even read yet.
Social media can be toxic if we don’t make ourselves aware of what we are looking at, absorbing and how it makes us feel.
According to a study done by FLURRY, the average US adult can spend up to 5 hours a day on their mobile phones. 50% of this time is spent on social apps, messaging and other various forms of media entertainment.
We tend to compare our lives to the lives of people we see and look up to online. It is so easy to watch the profile of someone who inspires you and to feel like you know their life and how they live.
BE INSPIRED. But don’t feel like you know their life or try to imitate their lives. I believe almost nobody posts their real life online. What we post are ‘highlights’, almost like a show reel for everyone to see and we cut out the parts which we feel are most irrelevant. But real life is so much more important. The pieces which are deemed not relevant enough to go online, are usually what make up our lives and in the big scheme of things, they are the important moments.
LET’S SAY FOR EXAMPLE ‘POPULAR’ GIRL GOES FOR LUNCH WITH HER FRIEND – SHE POSTS A PICTURE OF THEIR CHAMPAGNE GLASSES ON INSTAGRAM – TAGS VERY EXPENSIVE BAR – GAINS LIKES – BEHIND THIS SHE FALLS OUT WITH SAID FRIEND AND IS DEVASTATED AND GOES TO HER MUMS – MUM WRAPS HER UP IN A BLANKET AND HUGS HER LIKE WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE. THIS MOMENT WON’T BE POSTED. YET IT IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE INSTAGRAM POST FROM A FEW HOURS AGO.
An outsider may look at this thinking how glamorous ‘popular’ girl is and how they wish they could be more like that. Yet so much goes on that none of us see and I think sometimes we need to just remind ourselves of this.
Another thing I am guilty of is spending time looking at insanely beautiful women online, spending ages going through their photos and without even realising, comparing myself to them. I have to sometimes remind myself that these girls are also only posting highlights and that they most likely don’t wake up feeling or looking like a goddess everyday.
REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE FUCKING BEAUTIFUL AND NEVER EVER COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE.
Don’t get lost in the lives of others,
Make your own mark on the world
And Inspire like others inspire you.
